Goodbye, Xanga

It's been a good year and a half, xanga, but I think this is it. I want you to know that it's not you, it's me. I just don't have time to post here anymore. I'm sorry. I know it's hard *sniff sniff*

Good news for everybody else though- You can keep up with me at http://lonelybutneveralone.blogspot.com

I'll be keeping this subscription so I can post comments and harass you

It's been a good month.  Not much Xangaing though...I might be rethinking the whole thing.  Do I still want to mess with it?  Does anybody read it?  Is my life that interesting?  I've been posting deeper thoughts on another blog.  Should I just cancel this and do that?  I'll keep you posted.

For now, let me sum up holiday break for you.  After the semester was over, Peter and I celebrated our one year anniversary in style.  We went to Cincinnati and tried our hand at ice skating.  I have always wanted to go ice skating outdoors.  It was very fun but the rink was also very small.  Luckily though we didn't trample any of the many munchkins that were there falling on their butts left and right.  We toured the park on the waterfront, walked along the Ohio River, went to a Mediterranean grill for dinner, and went over to the Taft for the Over the Rhine Christmas show.  It was superific!  What a splendid day for celebrating a splendid relationship with such a splendid person!

I left for home on Tuesday the 20th and spoke at church on the night of the 21st.  That's only the second time I've spoken in a church service.  I talked about the significance of the incarnation.  It went well...I heard some positive feedback later that it made some people think some more about what Christmas means.  So that's cool.  My aunt, uncle, and cousins came to visit for about three days before Christmas actually happened.  It was fun but having so many people in the house at one time kind of wore me out.  One can only braid dolly's hair, play Uno Attacks, color pretty pictures, listen to monkeys squwaking constantly, and fly around with a magical cape for so long before one gets tired.  Oh and I learned to knit.  What great fun!

Christmas Eve and Christmas Day were spent mostly at church and with my parents.  We made the three and a half hour trip to Columbus in the sleet on Christmas evening.  The next day and a half were spent with grandparents and aunts and uncles and cousins, opening presents and eating A LOT.  Yikes!

Here is just a sampling of what Jackie got for Christmas:

·        A diamond necklace (I was a good girl!)

·        A gift card for Best Buy so I can get a digital camera

·        The Chronicles of Narnia box set

·        Cookware

·        Apples to Apples

·        Money

·        Tea Kettle

·        A new coat from Old Navy

·        Fun ice cube trays that make fun-shaped ice cubes

·        Edward Scissorhands, Say Anything, and Vanilla Sky on DVD

It's been nice being back in Wilmore and just hanging out.  Since I've been back I've done some shopping, some knitting, some reflecting, picked some people up from the airport, and seen a couple of movies too.  For New Year's Eve we went to church and listened to people doing kareoke with no alcohol.  What an interesting phenomenon.

Hope everyone's holidays were happy!  Happy 2006!!  I think it's gonna be a great year!

It's almost Christmas!  I love this time of year!  So many parties and get-togethers!  Almost being done with the semester!  It makes me happy.

Speaking of parties, tonight is the SLT Study Break!  We're having breakfast food, kareoke, boardgames, and prizes.  We're giving away an ipod mini!  Somebody's gonna make off like a bandit tonight.   Personally I think I deserve it since I drove all around Lexington twice searching for one only to find out that there is some kind of manufacturer's shortage or something like that.  I guess there are a few too many people getting ipods for Christmas.  I could have bought an "i-river" from Office Depot, but it just doesn't sound the same.  I think some people might have been mad with me, even though the sales clerk told me it was a better player than the ipod.  I personally am not attached to brandnames but I guess in our society that kind of thing is important.

So all that to say: If you're in Wilmore, come to the cafeteria tonight and have some fun with us.  You might win an ipod!

My semester is almost over.  Two more assignments and I'm done!  I have already checked out to some degree already.  Hopefully I will return sometime soon to finish up.

My new obsession is Texas Hold'em.  My ambition is to get together a big group of people and play for money sometime.  I'll have to be a little more cautious than I was when we played on Audrey's birthday though or else I'll lose all of my money in a hurry.  Anyone wanna play?

Like I said...a whole bunch of get-togethers this time of year.  I went to my first ever juggling party this past weekend.  It's kind of funny if you think about a whole room of twenty-somethings completely mezmorized by a professional juggler.  He did some amazing tricks including juggling a backpack, a kleenex box, and a shoe together.  He would have juggled machetes (sp? ya know, big knives...) but there wasn't enough room in Alex's house.   I probably would have even enjoyed the show a little more if I hadn't had a whole glass of Dr. Pepper spilled on my jeans at the very beginning and it hadn't started itching once it dried.  Yuck!

Christmas in Wilmore, the festival downtown, was a big disappointment after last year.  It was drizzling and there was hardly anybody outside braving the miserable weather.  And for some strange reason, seeing a banjo-playing band in the frozen food section at IGA is only funny once.  Last year I sure thought it was a riot.

The counseling Christmas party was pretty fun.  Sunday night we packed into Celia's SUV (Bertha was sadly missed) and went to the Mucherera's house for the annual open house.  We drove by the first time and decided there were not enough people there so we decided to look at more Christmas lights.  And Tammy got really excited about moving reindeer I thought she was gonna pee her pants!  Anyway, the Mucherera's cooked some amazing food.  And I definitely had three whole glasses of punch.  Boy, was it ever good.

This weekend will consist of Thai food in Cincinnati for Peter's birthday, lunch at the Macaroni Grill with other pastor's kids, and a Christmas party at the Tsukalis/Richter household.   Whew!  I'm a busy girl.

World AIDS Day

Every day in Africa:
HIV/AIDS kills 6,300 people
8,500 people are infected with the HIV virus
1,400 newborn babies are infected during childbirth

12 million African children have already lost one or both parents to AIDS. It seems as though it is an unstoppable epidemic. Or is it? Evidence shows that 90% of Africans taking life-saving anti-retroviral drugs (ARVS) have success when taking the drugs. These drugs make them able to take care of their families and live much healthier and lengthier lives. Sadly, though, only 500,000 of the 4.7 million who need immediate access to ARVS have access to them. The U.S. has made it possible for 350, 000 people who couldn’t receive them to have them, but I know we could be doing more.

We can not continue to ignore the crisis this country is in. We can not be afraid to mention the word AIDS anymore. It’s not just about sex. It’s about a lack of prevention education, especially in Africa. Compassion must win out. There is a world out there that is hurting and dying. Are our hearts breaking for them? Mine is. But what can I do? I am still seeking answers to this question.

This could be a start. I came across this site where you can light a candle for AIDS research. You light a candle by clicking on a specific continent and choosing a specific purpose. And it’s free. It won’t cost you a penny. And for every candle lit, this organization will donate $1 toward research. I don’t know if it’s for real, but what is there to lose? Here’s the link:

God, help us to know what to do with this information. I pray that it would not sit well with us but that it would stir up within your people a passion for helping the hurting. Where there is ignorance, let there be awareness. Where there is apathy, let there be passion. Where there is hatred and prejudice, let there be compassion.

Rejection hurts.  How many jobs can you be turned down for before it really starts hurting your self esteem?  I was just writing a paper about my fear of rejection when I got the call that I got turned down for yet another job.  Ironic, huh?
